A modern house in a new development in northern Germany: flat roof, light-coloured clinker brick, a wide paved driveway right on the street. No fence in front, no gate, no hedge – that is how the owners wanted it, and that is how it suits the house. For everyone else, however, the area was something quite different: the most convenient place far and wide to turn, park “just for a moment” or manoeuvre a trailer. Nobody ever asked.

Retractable stainless steel bollard with red LED ring secures the driveway of a modern house in the evening

Hard to miss in the evening: the red LED ring marks the boundary between street and property.

Why not a gate or a barrier arm?

A gate needs an enclosure, otherwise people simply drive around it – and that is exactly what deliberately does not exist here. Then there is everyday life: garage, trailer, in and out several times a day. A gate opening and closing every time would get in the way in the long run. A barrier arm in front of a house looks like a car park, and chains or folding posts have the well-known catch: you have to get out. After a few weeks they are left open, and the turning starts all over again.

The brief was therefore clear: the driveway should look as open as before – but only the residents should be able to drive onto it.

A single bollard is enough

At the street, the access is just wide enough for one bollard in the middle to suffice. No car can get past on the left or right, while pedestrians, bicycles and the lawnmower pass unhindered. A retractable barrier bollard made of V4A stainless steel was installed in the standard version, weighing around 160 kg, with a 273 mm diameter and 60 cm stroke.

The paving has been worked right up to the bollard with a surround of small setts. When lowered, only the stainless steel lid lies flush in the surface – anyone who does not know there is a barrier system there will not see it.

The red LED ring – security you can see

What convinced the owners most in the end only shows after dark. The red LED light ring at the top edge of the bollard can be seen from a distance and blends in with the lighting of the house, fence and driveway. That not only looks good, it has a practical reason too: a raised bollard must be visible to every driver at night – to strangers, so that they do not even drive in, and to the residents themselves, so that nobody accidentally drives into it. The bollard warns before it stops.

Operated at the push of a button

In everyday life it works like this: press the hand-held transmitter, the bollard lowers completely into the ground within a few seconds, you roll over it – and behind the car it rises again. No stopping or getting out, not even with the trailer attached. Anyone who prefers to integrate the system into their smart home can also control it via Siri or Loxone.

Compressed air instead of a motor in the ground

Our bollards work pneumatically. The bollard itself contains only a stainless steel cylinder; the compressor and valve stand dry in the house. There is no motor and no electronics in the ground that could be exposed to moisture or frost. The bollard is sealed to IP69, the seals are designed for temperatures down to −35 °C, and the system needs neither a heater nor a drain. Overall it is very low-maintenance.

One detail that matters particularly with a single bollard in front of a house: when raised, it locks mechanically at the top and cannot be pushed down – not even if someone cuts the air hose. The access stays closed. The material is V4A stainless steel (1.4571), manufactured in-house at our site in Seevetal near Hamburg.

Does everyone drive onto your property too?

The pattern is almost always the same: an open, easily accessible driveway in front of a street with no turning point – and everyone who does not know where to go uses it. Signs change little. A barrier that creates no work for anyone does. Whether one bollard is enough or several are needed depends mainly on the width of the driveway. We have described similar cases here:
